InclusAbility to Host Autism 101 Event With Autism Tennessee and Frist Center for Autism and Innovation

The program will help educate the Vanderbilt community about Autism Spectrum Disorders.

On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the InclusAbility program will be hosting an Autism 101 session from 1 to 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall 206. In collaboration with Autism Tennessee and Vanderbilt’s Frist Center for Autism and Innovation, this program is one of several events that InclusAbility will be bringing to campus this semester as a way for students to learn more about the experiences of those with disabilities, to understand what ableism is and to discuss ways to make the community more inclusive.

Autism Tennessee, a Nashville-based organization that aims to educate people about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and help create inclusive communities, will present the main part of the event. The aim of the session is to teach students about ASD, their common characteristics and what common myths or stereotypes are associated with them. Afterwards, the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation from Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering will provide a brief presentation about research in neurodiversity and technologies that will aid neurodiverse people, in addition to bringing awareness about neurodiversity to the workplace.

Autism Tennessee and the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation will also be joining InclusAbility the week after Spring Break for The Basics of Behavior program. This program will discuss behaviors, sensory processing disorder and ways the classroom can support students with ASD. This event will also be held in Alumni Hall 206 from 1 to 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March, 10.
