When my friend came to visit me at Vanderbilt, we had trouble finding a restaurant to go to. It wasn’t because we were picky eaters, but because she has celiac disease. In a city known for Nashville hot chicken, it is hard to find restaurants that have gluten-free options.
Although the Nashville food scene is constantly evolving, it still took some time to find the restaurant we were happy with. Some of the gluten-free restaurants listed online were permanently closed, so finding an updated version of the latest restaurant options was difficult. Eventually, we found a short list, ranging from meals to desserts. I strongly encourage you to try these restaurants out, even if you aren’t gluten-free yourself. The empathetic owners work hard to create menus that are safe for those with celiac disease, and they deserve all the support they can get.
Sixty Vines
With multiple gluten-free menu items that are rare to find, Sixty Vines is perfect for lunch and dinner! It has mocktails to pair with the gluten-free pizza and its location on Broadway makes it easy to access. The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and there is a dedicated kitchen space for gluten-free dishes. It also offers gluten-free fried chicken, so you can still enjoy that classic Nashville flavor.
Gluten Free Goose
Gluten Free Goose is a bakery founded by and for those with celiac disease. The location is a bit of a drive from campus, as it is between Brentwood and Antioch. Because the pastries don’t have that typical gluten-free taste or texture, I couldn’t even tell that they were made without any gluten. My friend loved it so much that we make sure to buy at least a dozen pieces every time we visit. As a tasty and safe option, I highly recommend making the drive for some of the best gluten-free desserts in Nashville.
Joyland
Home to one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had, Joyland also offers gluten-free biscuits to satisfy your fast-food cravings. Its cozy atmosphere, combined with its comfort food aesthetic, makes the restaurant a welcoming spot for a quick meal. Because it offers a convenient location just two miles away from Vanderbilt, it is a must-go.
Slice of Italy
If you ever feel like grabbing pizza, Slice of Italy is the restaurant to go to. With 13+ gluten-free pizza options, it is a joy for those craving some classic pizza slices. The variety they have ensures that there is something for every taste including Greek style, pesto chicken and classic margherita pizza. However, their gluten-free pizzas are only offered in single slices.
Peg Leg Porker BBQ
For that classic southern barbecue taste, the ribs Peg Leg Porker BBQ offers, along with the gluten-free menu, allow everyone to enjoy authentic flavors that can’t be found anywhere else. The beans and the pulled pork are delicious.
Postino
Postino is a classic wine bar with carefully curated plates and dishes. From the atmosphere to the welcoming staff, Postino’s is the perfect place for a lunch date. Its focus on creating a cozy environment makes it the perfect place to connect. I highly recommend the bruschetta options; it reminds me of the bruschetta I had in Spain.
E+Rose
With nine separate locations spread across the Nashville area, E+Rose is easily accessible. E+Rose has a focus on healthy, nutritional foods including beet falafel hummus wraps and banana bread. In addition, the cafe offers a variety of coffee, tea and smoothie bowls. E+Rose is highly experimental with its food, but it’s always visually appetizing. It reminds me a lot of the dining hall at the E. Bronson Ingram Residential College with its healthy and diverse menu, focusing on plant-based ingredients.
Finding delicious gluten-free restaurants with variety is difficult, which is why these Nashville spots stand out from the monotony of repeating the same meal. Whether or not you have a gluten-free diet, these restaurants are worth dining at for their diverse options, creativity and flavor.
