Study and sweat safely: how to work out without a gym

If you’re looking to avoid public spaces this semester but want to keep your fitness game strong, these virtual workouts can be just as effective as your gym or favorite fitness class.

August 16, 2020

Though back-to-school looks very different this year, returning to campus still calls for a return to a steady routine. If you’re eager to work-off the “quarantine 15” without having to mask-up at the gym, try these dorm, apartment and house friendly workouts.

Rachael DeVaux

During my many months at home, personal trainer and avid Instagrammer Rachael DeVaux kept me sane. Under her handle @rachaelsgoodeats, DeVaux posted live IGTV at-home workouts every Wednesday and Saturday. These 30 to 60-minute sweat sessions combine strength and cardio. DeVaux’s page also features shorter workouts which make effective study breaks. Perfect for working out in an alternative space, DeVaux’s classes typically only require weights and a chair, and she demonstrates modifications for those without the proper equipment. Plus, all of her workouts are free! While you’re on her page, take a moment to check out the healthy recipes to make in your apartment after your workout and make the most of your off-campus living experience.

Happy Monday you guys! It’s been forever since I did one of these and because there are some new faces since quarantine started I thought it would be fun to share some random facts you may or may not know about me 😊🤍 . ✨my name is Rachael DeVaux (Harlington 😏) ✨I’m a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and certified personal trainer ✨I loooove playing sports, I grew up playing basketball and soccer but honestly down for anything you throw at me (really good at ping pong also, thanks to my dad) ✨I’ve been together with @bridgerharlington since I was a senior in HS, almost 10 years (we even dated for 3 months in middle school lolol) 💘 he gets me to my core & is the best partner in life ✨we were supposed to get married in Cabo this last April but you know, covid. so we got married in his parents backyard 04/26/20 and moved our exact same Cabo plans to next April 💍 to celebrate 1 year of marriage with close friends & fam ✨I’ve always been the type to sit back & observe in order to understand what’s happening before I react/respond ✨I grew up messy, unorganized and slept in until 11am & somehow turned into a morning person, minimalist & needing everything to be organized 🙃 ✨ellie is my mini dachshund (weiner dog). I’ve had her since she was a puppy. She’s now 15 years old & seriously my bestie 🥺 she even lived with me in college for a few years at OSU ✨traveling the world makes my soul so happy & I can’t wait to be able to do it again!! ✨I work for myself & don’t take any days off, but honestly it’s not work when you’re building something you’re SO passionate about. I wouldn’t change it for the WORLD. You guys have given me such a gift to be able to do what I love every day, helping people on their fitness and nutrition journeys 🙏 & I don’t think I could ever say thank you enough ✨however, if this wasn’t my career, I would 100% be doing something with animals 🤗 I always wanted to be veterinarian, was fascinated with marine life (took oceanography in college and it was one of my favorite classes tbh) & ideally bridge & I would have 6 wiener dogs we always talk about it 😂 . Tell me something about you 🙋‍♀️ #rachaelsgoodeats

Peloton—at home fitness app

Though Peloton is best known for its bikes, the Peloton—at home fitness app can kick you into shape just as well. For $12.99 a month, you can become a Peloton Digital Member and have unlimited access to Peloton’s strength, cardio, yoga, bootcamp and stretching classes, plus their indoor and outdoor guided runs. Most of these workouts are easy to complete in a confined space, though some do require weights. Peloton is a versatile exercise program and can help users develop their athletic ability in a well-rounded manner. One of Peloton’s greatest features is that class participants rank its difficulty for public viewing, so that you can have a sense of what you’re getting yourself into before you start moving.

Melissa Wood Health

For those who love pilates and yoga, @melissawoodhealth on Instagram is the answer to your fitness needs. Wood offers a library of classes that focus on sculpting and leaning your body through low impact movement (perfect if you have neighbors and thin walls or floors!). Her exercises can be accessed through her website or through her app. All of Wood’s exercises can be done entirely using body weight which means no gym necessary. Her program also includes guided meditations, making her program a great way to practice self-care after, before or in between classes.

I share quite often how strongly I believe in prioritizing your practice. The reason I make this a priority each and every day is because it takes a conscious effort not to fall back to old negative patterns of living. The person I share with you now is a completely different version of the girl I once was. I was riddled with anxiety, and so deeply insecure it led me down a path for many years that did not serve me. My commitment to my daily practice of meditation and movement not only changed my life, it saved me from myself. I work hard to quiet these voices that live inside all of us telling us we are not enough. I am here with you all today because I keep choosing love. I choose to fully love myself as I am with no self judgement attached. This is exactly why I created the MWH method…to continually bring you back to a place that feels so damn good in your body, you can’t help but keep coming back for more. – I am so beyond excited to be partnering with @aerie for the launch of their new sub brand OFFLINE. Working with Aerie has been on my mental vision board for yearssss. A brand that celebrates women as they are. The real, raw beauty that lives within each and every one of us. In a world filled with photoshopped images, it’s a breath of fresh air to stand with a brand that does ZERO retouching and hasn’t since 2014. Teaching us all to love ourselves as we are, a message I am so insanely proud to stand behind. I am so honored to be apart of the #AerieREAL family as the OFFLINE by Aerie wellness expert. I could cry. Actually, I already did. ☺️🙏🏼 #goingOFFLINE #AeriePartner @aerie

Go Outside

If you have some extra time on your hands and want some fresh air, try running the stairs at Percy Warner Park or going hiking at Radnor Lake. Need someone to motivate you? Barre3 offers weekly outdoor classes in Centennial Park (sign up through the link in their Instagram bio). You can even take your virtual class outdoors if WiFi permits! With Nashville’s many parks and sunny weather, there are plenty of ways to get those endorphins to kick in.

More outdoor #barre3? Yes, please! 🌞 Beginning this Friday, July 17, we are adding another outdoor class to our weekly schedule – Summer Fridays, 5:30PM at Centennial Park! Register for class via MindBody using your regular membership, class package, or ClassPass at The Gulch studio location. (Sunday afternoon outdoor classes will still be free.) Space will be limited to 25 people to allow for adequate social distance. We recommend wearing a face mask during check-in, but you are welcome to remove it during the workout if/while you maintain at least 6 feet of physical space between you and your neighbor. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. First up teaching this Friday 7/17: our girl Kendall! Join the party. 🥳 #barre3nashville

Working out might not look the same this year, but don’t let the change in circumstances stop you from reaching your goals and getting stronger this fall.
