Dean Townes on the intersection of faith and queerness
September 5, 2017
After the release of the Nashville Statement a week ago, conversations regarding how to reconcile Christian values and support of the LGBT community have become common on campus.
The Hustler sat down with Emilie Townes, the Dean of the Vanderbilt University Divinity School, a nondenominational institution, to discuss how Christians can read scripture holistically in order to always put love first.
In our conversation, Townes stressed her disagreement with the “cherrypicking” of scripture, such as that of the Nashville statement, rather than the emphasis on universal love and inclusion.
Townes released a public statement in response to the Nashville Statement on the Divinity School Facebook and Twitter pages immediately following its publication last week.
