University to hold 9/11 remembrance at Benton Chapel

On Tuesday, Vanderbilt University will commemorate the anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 with a period of quiet reflection at Benton Chapel. Beginning at noon, four chimes will ring from Kirkland Hall, and the doors of Benton Chapel will open to students, faculty and staff.

The four chimes will represent the four separate attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Flight 93.

The Office of the University Chaplain and Religious Life will assist with the service.

“We will ring the chimes on Tuesday at noon and have Benton Chapel open for all within the Vanderbilt community to visit, sit in silence, pray or meditate to honor this historic tragedy,”  Rev. John Forrester, the University Chaplain and Director of Religious Life, said.

While many Vanderbilt students are too young to remember the attacks of 17 years ago, they will still have the opportunity to meditate and reflect.

“Our faculty and staff still have 9/11 etched in our memories,” Forrester said.

Students seeking resources on this day may contact the Office of the University Chaplain and Religious Life (615-322-2457), the University Counseling Center (615-322-2571) and the Center for Student Wellbeing (615-322-0480).
